Razones por las que Argentina deberia adoptar el software libre

Desde hace tiempo en la región se viene adoptando Software Libre como una decisión política del Estado o de empresas particulares. Esto ocurre desde Brasil a Venezuela, pasando por Ecuador o Bolivia. Sin embargo, Argentina posee una política ambigua o en todo caso proclive a dar apoyo al software privativo.

¿Por qué? Básicamente porque empresas que venden un modelo privativo y no libre están fuertemente entramadas en los mecanismos políticos, culturales y económicos del país, con especial énfasis en la educación, las pequeñas y medianas empresas, y el lobby político: IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Microsoft y Cisco, son las multinacionales más visibles en este sentido, y, si bien todas ellas trabajan con Software Libre en algún punto, sólo Sun posee una política bastante coherente con el software libre (desarrollo de OpenOffice, Java, OpenSolaris).

Mientras en Argentina se habla de promover la integración regional, el gobierno de Brasil ya adoptó software libre con éxito desde el 2003, el de Venezuela desde el 2004, Ecuador desde 2008, Uruguay lo adoptó con las OLPC en su sistema educativo de enseñanza básica y en Paraguay se está trabajando en sintonía con el resto de estos países.

Las iniciativas argentinas para revalorizar la tecnología y la ciencia, deberían tener en cuenta al único tipo de software que permite un desarrollo de modo científico: utilizar con cualquier fin, estudiar cómo está hecho, copiarlo y mejorarlo para aportar un bien a la sociedad.

Otras razones políticas tienen que ver con la optimización del gasto del Estado, fortalecer el desarrollo local, la innovación, la soberanía tecnológica, y la inclusión digital.
